今年82歲的殿堂級街頭攝影師Joel Meyerowitz,五十多年前在一家廣告公司當藝術導演的他,偶然參與了著名攝影師Robert Frank的拍攝過程,拍完之後,他步行一個小時回公司:「當時在回家的路上看著街道,以一種前所未有過的方式去感受它的動態與色彩,就像是在讀一本書。」結果因而下定決心要轉行。當年請辭,老闆只問了他一句:「你有照相機嗎?」從此,他就拿著廣告公司老闆借給他的一台35mm相機,踏上了漫長的攝影路。

這位街頭攝影藝術大師於1962年展開他的攝影生涯。足跡遍布美國各州、法國與德國等,但他坦言,喧鬧紛亂的紐約街頭才是個人最喜歡的創作地:「紐約第五大街是我的拍攝寶地。這世界上沒有任何一條街道能讓我走這麼多遍…… 在這條街上,你可以看到騎著自行車的郵差,也能看到美艷的模特兒、尊貴的億萬富翁,也能看到皮條客…… 強烈的對比一一展現於人前,日日如是。」攝影生涯的前十五年,他風雨不改,每天都出現在紐約第五大道,跟幾位如Garry Winogrand與Diane Arbus,今日一樣是赫赫有名的攝影師在一起。比起競爭者,大家更像朋友。街上每一道光影與每一個棱角,每一位紐約客與他人、與環境、與城市之間的互動與巧合一瞬,全都記錄在他的鏡頭下。

回想從前進行街頭拍攝比今日容易得多。他曾經分享:「那時候的人們很天真,他們不覺得自己正被別人拍攝,怎麼會拍我?我又不是明星。今天,明星效應放大了許多事情,在更多自我意識浮現的同時,人們也越來越怕自己被別人拍了照片放到網上,或醜化他們的形象,或是憑藉照片賺錢。有時候你在街上舉起相機,馬上會有人過來質問你:為何拍我?你為甚麼拍我的孩子?你想幹甚麼!」

不過換個角度看,街頭攝影也變得更自由了。每個人都拿著智能手機拍來拍去,但在Joel心目中,智能手機只是”take a picture”而已,與手持相機認真創作的“make a photograph”,是截然不同的事。他認為攝影是一種有意識的堅決的行為,無論是取景還是按下快門都需要經過攝影師的深思。智能手機更接近於一種”snapshot”的工具。

街頭拍攝最大的藝術價值在於對社會的真實記錄,與及過程沒有深思熟慮的機會。「拍攝只是幾分之一秒的事情,根本沒有考慮的時間,所以攝影師必須多磨練。學會掌握拍攝技巧和拍攝時機,才能在正確的時間與地點拍出最精彩的照片。」儘管Joel的照片感動了無數觀眾,但他做攝影的目並不在此,他是為了在這些場景中感受一種生命存在和意識清醒的狀態,每一幅作品都是個人對生命的一次頓悟的記錄。

9·11事件發生後不久,他深入世貿大廈遺址拍攝了《Ground Zero》作品系列,他是唯一一位在災難現場記錄了九個月清理工作的攝影師。對於Joel來說,他不是那種在戰場和災區出生入死的攝影記者,決定展開這個拍攝計畫,全因他對紐約的熱愛。

直到今日,Joel仍在進行拍攝,半世紀以來出版過多部作品,曾多次在紐約現代藝術博物館與全球各大博物館和畫廊展出近四百次。在攝影生涯中的第五十個年頭,他將作品整合出版了作品集《Joel Meyerowitz: Taking My Time》。
